The Rock Interns version 2.0 (or 1.1)

So it's been quite a while since the last post. I think it's fair to say the thousands of people (read: two) who read this no longer check in for updates.

Anyway, the blog is back for two reasons:
1. I need to have a blog for a marketing class I am taking.
2. (and possibly more importantly) I was given a new mix and promised a review.
(3.) The new Bloc Party streets tomorrow and it is excellent. listen here

Basically, v2 of The Rock Interns will have reviews of mixes (meaning people have to GIVE US MIXES!!!!) and some random concert and other music reviews and thoughts. We may even add some more Interns (considering Intern Dave probably doesn't even know about this update). So check back again because hopefully there will be updates.

So here is the mix review:

DISC 1

1. The Moldy Peaches "NY's Like a Grave Yard"
Cool but not that cool, sloppy, can listen again

2. Devotchka "“We're Leaving"
eh

3. Os Mutantes "“Mina Meninah"”
Kind of annoying, can’t decide what they want to do

4. Mannequin Men "Spiders in the Hallway"
Tries the whole “I can’t sing in tune” thing but can’t pull it off. Kind of sounds like he is trying too hard

5. The Radio Dept. "“City Limits"
M83 meets Thom Yorke’s voice but not as good as that combination should sound.
Decent but off the mark. Not as innovative or good as Album Leaf. More layered synths and cheesy synth-sounding drums.

6. Junior Boys "In the Morning"
Pretty cool. They obviously like Prince a bit too much though. I happen to be a fan of cliché electronic sounds but they overuse them quite a bit. My main complaint though is that the song doesn’t go anywhere, it doesn’t evolve.

7. Broadcast "America'’s Boy"
I feel like I’ve heard this song but haven’t (which is not really a positive). The female vocals work but the track could/should be cleaner.

8. Animal Collective "Grass"
Pretty good.

9. Japanther "Pleased to Meet You"
I’ve heard a lot of shitty recordings and been able to still like a song. This song is mixed so terribly and even if it’s on purpose, it ruins a song that has potential.

10. Why? "“Cold Lunch"
Good song, wish it was longer.

11. Blood on the Wall "“Keep Your Eyes"
Female singer.

12. Times New Viking "The Statue PT. II (A Monument and Its Muse, A Love
Story)"
OK… This song would be awesome if it was mixed properly. I understand that it's cool” to have your song mixed terribly (most of the bands who do this are probably trying to cover up the shitty song underneath) but this song could be really awesome if they weren't stupid in the studio.

13. Ronnie Whitehead "“Begging You"
Interesting change of pace. I think I like it but can’t completely decide.

14. The Brian Jonestown Massacre "David Bowie I Love You (Since I was Six)"
Good. Second best song on the disc (next to Beirut)

15. Beirut "After The Curtain"
They must listen to Jeff Buckley -– this is a very good thing. Best song on the disc!!!

DISC 2

1. Okkervil River "Westfall"
Sounds a bit like an indie Guster. I like it.

2. Mr. David Viner "“Birdsnest"
Good rocky blues

3. Sons and Daughters "“Johnny Cash"
alright

4. Joanna Newsom "Three Little Babes"
Shut up. Not good enough to have such an annoying voice.

5. Elvis Perkins “"It'’s Only Me"
I like. Good singer songwriter song.

6. Minus Story "Joyless, Joyless"
I like quite a bit!!

7. The Gossip "“Night"
Too much like Karen O. for me to like it

8. The Good Life "“Album of the Year"
Pretty good. Definitely listen again.

9. The Kills "“Black Rooster"
Pretty good but not as good as a lot of the other songs on here

10. Wolf Parade "“You are A Runner and I am My Father’s Son"
I like Wolf Parade, have always liked Wolf Parade, and will probably continue to like Wolf Parade.

11. Sleater-Kinney "Entertain"
No thanks

12. The Appleseed Cast "“Hanging Marionette"
I like. Surprised it’s on this mix though. A bit emo-ish for it.

13. Owen "“Skin and Bones"
I like. Quite a bit like American Football (is it the same singer? Yes, yes it is. Owen is Mike Kindsella's personal project. Obviously I really like American Football and I really like this song but it was quite easy to pick out the relationship without me knowing anything about Owen.)

14. Beirut "Postcards from Italy"
Good but not as good as the Beirut song on the other disc.

15. Caetano Veloso "“Alfomega"
A foreign Beck?

Thank you Andrea for making this mix. Lots of good stuff to check out.

Who wants to see Annuals at Schubas in Chicago on the 22nd?

That's all for now.
